Bert Verso is a DJ, producer, beat head and all-round positive force within Newcastle’s effervescent underground over the last two decades. A staple of the wider North-Eastern music scene and a key player in the low-slung beat collective Grey Tapes, Verso has long been known for his chameleonic nature, bringing a splash of colour and eclecticism to the more percussive and rhythm-led branches of hip hop and electronic music.

Honeybees is the first of 3 EPS that Bert Verso has slated for release this year with newly-formed label This.

This is a genre-fluid global collective operating loosely in the esoteric realms of electronic music, driven by a desire to put quality and vision above defined genre tags.

The Honeybees EP is a collection of 3 hardware-driven tracks, written as lockdown unfurled around the UK and finished in Verso’s recently established studio space. True to form, it touches inquisitively on familiar points of the electronic spectrum, while comfortably conjuring something fresh and unique out of the folds and spaces in between.

The title track Honeybees is a kind of liquid ghetto-tek; its uptempo, shifting drums offset by sanguine chords. Braincircles is tripped out, slo-mo techno which hits with the force of a warehouse rave track.

Daddy Blue is a warmly melodic electro roller, further highlighting Verso’s uncanny knack for carving playful satisfaction from genre experimentation.

Born from a desire for more club-ready ammunition in Verso’s DJ sets, the three tracks on Honeybees trascend mere DJ fodder. These colourful, idiosyncratic gems represent some of the most unique genre-bending experimentations heard in recent times, on or off a dancefloor.
